Alana and Kiana carrying the offensive load, improved defense and rebounding, and over and over I hear players and coaches talking about "playing with pace" which I take means running the Princeton faster than opponents can think to defend it. I was very encouraged that Tara said that "all three freshmen defend well" with is always a Taraism for saying they will all see meaningful minutes.
Tara's quote doesn't go into detail about what she meant. My impression is that generally "pace" today means trying to push the ball up the floor quickly and attack early in the shot clock before the defense is set. That includes conventional fast breaks, quick passes to a player who has leaked out early or outrun her defender, and plays or actions designed to find the open player when any defender is late getting back or the defense is slow to get organized.
When the defense gets back and set in time, I don't know if Stanford will try to run their half court offense extra fast. They may, or they could go with more patience when that happens.
Or it could be both. Clearly in the exhibition we tried to push it whenever we could. But the purpose of the Princeton is to avoid that stagnation in the half court that we have seen too often--always providing a choreographed series of cuts and passes. The faster and more efficiently we can progress through those reads the harder it is for the defense to keep up. That is one of the fun things we might see tonight as Davis is more experienced in running the Princeton than we are and possibly more conventional about how they run it--it will make for an interesting comparison.
