The quarter-final round of an eight-team playoff should happen the weekend after the conference championship games, with the games played at the home of the higher seeds.
I don't know if this is contractually possible, but the five power conferences (forget about the others being involved) could, at least in my head, band together to market and sell this round of games to TV separate from their existing deals.
