And I am pretty sure nobody, including JH, knows exactly why. The #1 defense sure didn't show up in the bowl game, and ND beat them with Wimbush at QB. Why and how, I really don't know. If it were some obvious, easy thing to fix, it would be fixed already. As pointed out by others, some good coaches have gone to Michigan and not done as well as JH.
There are some commentators who want JH to go toward a more spread offensive style. I don't really see that happening anytime soon. It just may be as simple as bad luck. It also may be that Michigan needs to win one of these games to prove (to themselves) that they can. What would have happened at Stanford without the Greatest Upset Ever? In any case, replacing JH is not a certain path to a better record, and probably a path to a worse one, based on history.
Another question might be what would have happened at Stanford if we hadn't recruited an Andrew Luck.
IMO, JH is not going to get fired for 10-3 records. He may not make the Michigan coaching hall of fame, though.
He also may get frustrated and head back to the NFL.
My 2 cents: the GUE was the turning point. JH made us all believers, but most importantly he made the team believe in itself. I can’t recall seeing mention of any of our coaches other than than JH leading our team in 50 pushups. Maybe that’s easy leadership but IMHO it worked.
There were a lot of heroes in that game but Luck wasn’t one of them.
And remember Luck was only the 3rd QB offered by JH that year. IIRC Dayne Crist was the first choice.
