That’s not quite right.  A hardship year is usually only awarded if a player has not voluntarily redshirted.  Sixth years, when granted, are typically only awarded when a player misses two years due to injury, not when he misses one year due to injury after having already redshirted for non injury purposes.  Personally, I think the distinction is kind of dumb, and to be honest the rule should be simple; five years to play four, no matter what the reason for not playing is.
