The Shaw years have been marked by overall consistency masking volatile performance -- that is, Shaw teams have scored a lot of points, prevented a lot of points from being scored, been strong runners, passers, been good at preventing the pass or the run, sacked a lot or not much at all. There is, however, one consistent advantage -- the team's consistent strength on special teams. Per Bill Connelly: 

I wanted to focus on something else; he's always found a way to win eight or more games.  Although we think of the team as an ok offensive team with a strong running game and an inconsistent defense, Shaw has managed to win with very good defenses (2012/2013), explosive offenses (2011, 2015), big play running offense (2017), a pass first offense with a weak running game (2018), a combination of "good enough" offense and defense (2014 and 2016).
