At a glance, we seem to be in pretty solid positioning to repeat, since the Big Ten schools right behind us tend to fade in the spring sports. By year end, our usual closest competitors have historically been UCLA, Texas, Florida, and USC, right? It looks like Florida and UCLA are so far down they'd be unlikely to catch us, but do you have a sense of where we stand vis-a-vis Texas and USC in terms of remaining sports?
2006,
I looked up the current NCAA ranking for Stanford, USC and Texas in the sports not yet officially scored and translated those rankings into Cup points. Some Cup points were approximate, but probably close enough for purposes for this analysis. I also ignored cases where a school is not ranked in the Top 25 but still might score Cup points in a field of 64 or 32 teams (Stanford Softball?)
With 17 sports remaining to be scored, I get the following estimates of potential Cup points for each school:
Stanford – 934 across 12 sports, average of 78 points/sport
USC – 732 across 10 sports, average of 73 points/sport
Texas – 596 across 9 sports, average of 66 points/sport
BTW, USC currently has three teams ranked #1 (Women’s Water Polo, Women’s OTF, and Women’s Golf). We have enough strength in the remaining sports to end up above last year’s total. I don’t think either USC or Texas will pass the Cardinal.
Geaux Cardinal!
