Well, technically, as this applicant had yet to enroll, he or she was not a student.
This penalty is much less severe. He or she was still in the window to accept an offer from another college and send in the deposit. No one will ever know about Yale. He or she could simply say a rejection happened.
The student that Stanford dismissed, on the other hand, is going to pay a price. Her academic record from Stanford will cease to exist. She is going to have to explain her missing year or years on her CV.
