No UConn, Notre Dame, Baylor. I imagine that we will be somewhat tentative without Alanna until our frosh get better integrated into the starting lineup, and so maybe Tara is taking it a tad easier than normal. Or maybe the marquee team is coming in the Vancouver tournament? Anyone know the other teams in that tournament?
Tennessee as usual, Texas again, Ohio State after last year's miss, and Gonzaga and Buffalo. These to go along with a sprinkling of more local teams (Eastern Washington?, USF, Northern Colorado, Davis.)
Tennessee lost top scorer Evina Westbrook and probably will take at least a little while to regain stature with Kellie Harper as new Head Coach. They are rebuilding.
Texas had a disappointing year (losing in Round 1) and lost 2 of its 5 leading scorers. We will once again see Associate head coach Jamie Carey whose name is familiar to long time Stanford fans. I don't think I would say they are in rebuilding mode but their talent level does not look as high as when they came into Stanford and beat us a couple years ago.
Ohio State doesn't have a single senior and has 7 frosh. McGuff is still rebuilding after graduating all 5 starters and 3 WNBA players two years ago. Last year they missed the trip due to smoke. They will be better than they would have been last year, but again they are not the same team that beat us twice a couple of years ago.
As for Gonzaga and Buffalo--both could be dangerous, but Gonzaga graduated Stockton, Rice, and Chandler Smith and Buffalo graduated their star Cierra Dillard. Neither will be as powerful as they were last year--in their homes--with senior laden teams.
I kind of like this schedule. Lots of home games, and teams that should challenge our youngsters without overwhelming them, allowing time for some chemistry to build before we take on the true challenge of Oregon etc.
