Honestly, I think this is a bit of a small numbers thing and that in due time we would basically have offenses and defenses that randomly fluctuated about a certain level.

There are two factors that may contribute to non-randomness is the offense vs. defense recruiting. First, if we have a good offense (or defense), many guys may not want to come here because they are afraid they won't get to play. Granted, graduation may make this less important, but as a first order effect, having a good defense (for example) may temporarily scare off some defensive recruits. The second effect is that the coaching staff may focus or fixing problems. If they see the offense is ok, even good, but the defense is bad, they may focus on fixing the defense, so the offense decays. Yes, that probably shouldn't happen, but the problem of the moment often gets the greater effort.
