The ESPN's SEC Game of the week starts at 7:30PM or 8PM Eastern. Loaded with commercial breaks, that game routinely runs up to 11 or even 11:30PM Eastern. The end of that SEC game easily dominates all CFP programming running at that time. A 7PM Pac-12 game is approaching halftime before that SEC game ends.
First, the Pac 12 already has a game it “owns” at 7pm, there is no reason to own more than one. The reason why it’s so easy to own that timeslot is because it’s so unappealing. How many viewers can you hope to get when a 7:30 game ends at 2AM eastern time?
Worse as most fans of the Pac-12 know those Pac-12 After Dark 7:30PM games often start without a TV audience at all as those never ending Big12 games routinely run waaaaaaaaaaay over their scheduled time slot. So the Pac-12 often unable to claim the #1 show in a time slot prior to 8:30PM Pacific or so.
Even if the Pac-12 had the best athletes, coaching and passionate season ticket holders, this is still a ratings and revenue game the Pac-12 will lose because there are just more people living East of the Mississippi and those TV audiences generally prioritize watching schools from their geographic footprint.
I wish the Pac-12 will breakaway from TV revenue dependency, but I know the majority of the ADs in the conference need the biggest possible TV contract in the short-term.
If 9AM is undesirable....how about 11PM. The Pac-12 could own that Asia/Pacific with Sunday AM kickoffs to that potential audience of 2-3 billion people. ;)
