Yeah, I agree that was an odd quote.  If any team deserves the benefit of the doubt for outperforming when the doubters proclaimed "this season is when Stanford will finally revert" year after year after year, it is Shaw's Stanford teams.  Like, compared to most on this board, I am pretty bearish on the team next year, but the fact that Shaw's teams have come through in the face of doubt in the past, is one of the strongest arguments against my bearishness.
