John Frank was a second round pick of the 49ers out of tOSU. Terrific tight end. Retired after five years in the NFL, went to med school, became an otolaryngologist. Client of my first firm, when he visited our offices, I was shocked at how small he was, relatively speaking. My lasting memory of Frank was a play that he blocked Lawrence Taylor so effectively, that Taylor started whaling on him and drew a critical 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty.
Frank retired at the peak of his career, having had successful fourth and fifth seasons. It was a surprise when he retired. The Niners replaced Frank with Brent Jones and 1989 2nd round pick Wesley Walls. Rest was history.
