I have a good friend, in his mid-50s. Played D-1 college baseball for one of the directional Michigan colleges, a pretty good team. Mediocre fastball and literally no changeup but he had good control and a Romo-like ridiculous slider and an overhand delivery that produced a Zito-like 12-6 hook. His college coach didn't like to pitch him much because he was a non-recruited walk-on, and his fastball was only high-80s. But his career and seasonal ERA would have been the lowest in his league if he'd pitched enough innings to qualify. He struck out more than one batter per inning, WHIP around 1.00.

On the advice of one of his teammates who had been drafted, scouts from three separate pro teams asked him to try out. But his parents were pressuring him to get over the baseball bug and get a job, and his girlfriend was pressuring him to get married, and so he got a job and got married (he's still married to her), gave up his dream and never tried out.

Odds of making MLB? Ridiculously against him. But he thinks about it, and has his regrets and wishes he'd at least tried out.
