The only times that system has put up decent points is when Stanford had generational talent in the backfield and/or front line.

Seems we've had "generational talent" more than once in a generation in the last ten years.

I'd like to see Shaw take a page from his friend's (Dabo Swinney) playbook.  In Swinney's second full year at Clemson, the Tigers went 6-7 (4-4 in the ACC).  So Swinney went out and hired an up-and-coming offensive coordinator from Tulsa named Chad Morris.  Tulsa had gone from scoring 29 points on a game on 4921 yards (5.6 yards per play) in 2009 to 41 points per game on 6573 yards (6.5 ypp) the next year under Morris.  Morris engineered a similar turnaround at Clemson; Clemson went from 24 ppg on 4349 yards (5.0 yards per play) the year before Morris became OC to 37 ppg on 6171 yards (5.9 ypp) his first year as coordinator, to 41 ppg on 6665 yards (6.3 ypp) his second year.  He then repeated this as head coach at SMU taking them from 11 ppg (not a typo) and a 1-11 season the year before they arrived to 38 ppg and a bowl game three years later.  Not saying we need to take on Morris' system (detailed in excruciating detail here: https://matchquarters.com/2018/12/01/the...ve-system/) but I think we need to find our own Chad Morris, an up-and-coming, innovative OC.

What a great idea, BC!!  Now all we have to do is go find a previously-unknown coach of extraordinary potential and hire him.  Any thoughts about how we go about identifying this program transforming person?  We should get right on this.  But keep it hush, hush.  We wouldn't want any other program to think of this.

I really am just kidding but you know, we already had this experience in the past.  Walsh wasn't exactly unknown, but I don't think folks understood how staggering his effect on football would be when he came to Stanford the first time.  And then, the hiring of Harbaugh and Shaw could surely be described as serendipity to a significant degree.  Miracles happen.  Just not very often in the places and at the times of our choosing.  Sometimes we are not even aware that they have occurred.
