My guess is staff still wants to redshirt Herron and is relying on at least 1 of the 2 injured guys coming back within the next couple games. Worst case, Andres can play in 4 games and still preserve his shirt, so assuming we make a bowl we can play Herron next game, play Andres in the last 3, then have both available for the bowl.
Good insight regarding Herron's redshirt. I think they need to try to preserve what they can or it is going to throw the pipeline numbers all out of whack. If Hornibrook and Manley keep playing, which seems likely, that will be 12 burnt shirts, half the class.
However, Andres Fox will only be able to play one more game and redshirt; he's already played in three games. I'll bet they save Andres for the last game if needed for bowl eligibility, or the bowl game if not.

I believe the participation report is wrong, and whoever made it thought #6 (IBS on special teams) was Fox; they share a number. If Fox had actually played, he would have stats. Playing him in the first 3 games, when our OLBs were all healthy, would make absolutely no sense if staff was redshirting him to learn a new position. At the very least I watched the entire NW game and he 100% did not play - it was Toohill, J. Fox and Reid the whole game, with walk-on Caleb Phillips coming in for goal line D.
I actually believe "throwing the pipeline out of whack" isn't that bad considering the positions where most shirts are being burnt; we need to recruit more players per class anyways. The OL and DB pipelines can (and must!) support burnt shirts, considering we're planning to take 5 and 4 respectively next class, and will still likely have 2 OL (Nugent and Bragg unfortunately due to injury) and 2 DBs (Turner-Muhammad and Toomer) redshirting. Those need to be large rooms anyways since there are 5 on the field every down (we're in nickel a vast majority of the time). RB is a bit more tenuous for now, but if staff lands 2 and/or convinces one of the 2 seniors to return for a fifth year, we'll be ok.
