The difference is that for Mason the 2019 season was his sixth, none of which have been winning seasons (he's had two seasons where he has qualified for a bowl game after going 6-6). For Shaw, the 2019 season was his ninth, none of which had been losing seasons before this one.
One could legitimately wonder whether Mason's ceiling with his existing coordinators was 6-6, and whether he ought to be able to do better, as his predecessor James Franklin was able to do (he had two 9-4 seasons before bolting to Penn State), and thus that after six seasons, immediate action is required. On the other hand, one could legitimately debate whether Shaw's 4-8 season was a blip or a sign of permanent mediocrity (or worse) that requires immediate action. I know some people have made up their mind on this, but the case is far from clear.
