Our vaunted defense did not defend the last three quarters, and our shooting accuracy tanked too. Such is the stuff of 30 point losses.
Most revealing to me is how few players Tara was willing to play during crunch time. Oregon looked much deeper than we did.
I know AZ State held them to under 70 points, but playing at home, we would only hope to contain the Ducks and our offense could not keep up. Every time Ionescu shot the ball, I was expecting it to go in. That is the dependability of a superstar, in the mode of a Breanna Stewart, Nneka or Griner. Unfortunately, we do not have that player on our roster at the moment.
Our offense can be too predictable at times and we were forcing passes that resulted in turnovers; we simply cannot do that and give Oregon multiple possessions in a row without a chance to score ourselves.
We used to have that type of inside scoring presence like Hebard, known as Appel and then the Ogwumike sisters. It's not as fun when we are on the other side...
Ionescu and Hebard are clearly the most talented and experienced players on the court and they took over the game. Our chance was to have a complete team effort and although we hung with them for roughly 23-25 minutes, we could not maintain that level and like any elite team does, they took over.
Maybe I became a Stanford wbball fan during one of our zeniths at the tail end of the Wiggins era into the Appel-Pedersen-Ogwumike period and I became spoiled, but have we lost 30+ point games in back to back seasons before where we looked completely outmatched?
