Here are the anticipated singles lineups:
1. #6 Gordon vs. #14 Elysia Bolton
2. Arbuthnott vs. #5 Abigail Forbes
3. #77 Blake vs. #16 Jada Hart
4. #123 Shin vs. Abi Altick
5. Choy vs. #114 Annette Goulak
6. Higuchi vs. Sasha Vagramov
Man, those top three lines are brutal. If Gordon were in midseason form, maybe I’d give her an edge, but not the way she’s been playing. Forbes is a big ask for Arbuthnott, and the same goes for Hart with Blake. If Shin had been playing better, I might give her the edge over Altick, but again, her current form doesn’t give me a great deal of confidence. Choy likely has a coin flip, and Higuchi might be the only match where I’m more optimistic, but Vagramov is a really tough draw—she’s a very good freshman, and she’s the kind of tall, big-hitting player that gives Higuchi fits.
That’s not to say we don’t have a chance! We tend to rise to the occasion when we play UCLA. Gordon could *absolutely* beat Bolton, this could be the match where Shin shakes it off and finds the late-season form she had last year, and Blake could continue to show that she’s a force to be reckoned with. This team, as always, refuses to be beaten. Arbuthnott will force a third set out of sheer stubbornness, probably.
