In 1996, the year that Tiger won the individual championship, the Stanford team finished fourth, 19 behind ASU, 16 behind UNLV, and 1 behind... East Tennessee State.
Tiger was the only player under par at -3, four strokes ahead of Rory Sabbatini (Arizona, which finished fifth as a team), six up on Mike Ruiz (ASU) and Darren Angel (UNLV). East Tennessee State was anchored by Irishman Keith Nolan, who finished 10 behind Tiger.
In 1995, Stanford lost in a playoff to Oklahoma State and Woods finished tied for fifth in the individual championship. However, Tiger did win the US Amateur in 1995 (and in 1994 and in 1996), so not all was lost.

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
