To me this strikes me more like a drunk driver who has the misfortune of driving straight into an oncoming bigrig.  You might have wondered if a sober person would have been able to swerve at the last minute to aver disaster, and of course you can criticize the drunk driver for stepping on the gas instead of the break and making this worse, but it's also possible that even the most skilled driver wouldn't have made it out unscathed.
