The point is not political. It's that this has come with such speed that society is still in a state of shock. Reminiscent of 9'11, I don't think the event has been fully assimilated yet - not even close.
I don't share your pessimism. A society as resourceful and resilient as this one will cope. But I don't think we're returning to 'normal' any time soon. In fact, 'normal' is going to be considerably different - better in some ways, worse in others, but very, very different. The bottom line is that herd immunity isn't going to be acquired any time soon (making hash of the original plan to isolate the elderly and endangered, and let nature take its course with the rest), vaccination is a long time in the future, and then outbreaks will re-occur.
We are dealing with a transforming event, and no one as yet knows how.
I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - yeah, and a little looking out for the other fella, too.
