It matters because governments want to distract their citizens with finger-pointing to cover up for their own failures and incompetence, and in every country, there’s going to be some people who think their government is doing a perfect job and want to contribute to the distractions.

There are obedient pawns in Iran who think they’re being good, patriotic Iranians by echoing theories that the US designed Covid to attack Iranian DNA, shifting attention away from the failures by the Iranian government.

There are plenty of issues to take up with the Chinese government, but there is no reason to take them up now except for domestic politics. In fact, because it appears China for some reason seems to be the only country capable of manufacturing PPE for healthcare workers, and because many drug trials are simultaneously being run in the US and in China, it is actually harmful for Americans, harmful to American healthcare workers, and harmful to the global quest for effective treatments and vaccines to repeatedly inflame what is only an unlikely theory at this time.

Promoting these theories shifts the focus away from what really matters to Americans: how can we solve these problems and what is the American government doing or utterly failing to do for the American people.
