Just to be clear, there were six million motor vehicle collisions in the US last year.  Most people involved in a motor vehicle collision survive, regardless of whether they wear a seatbelt.  The chances of dying are about 9% for people not wearing a seatbelt, and about 5% for those wearing a seatbelt.  The fact that 9 in 10 people who don’t wear a seatbelt survive is no reason not to take the reasonable precaution of wearing one.  Thankfully 6 in 7 people involved in a car accident do wear a seatbelt, so the overall mortality is 6%.
