Wasn’t.  Thanks.  Yes Davis left Stanford over Chris Munk who ended up at USC and was pretty average. 
Of course Davis leaving brought in Monty and the rest is history. 

Monty won 4 league championships.  In the 90 or so years before him Stanford won 3.

All true.  But Howie Dallmar was a pretty good guy [I often stand on the rail near his memorial plaque to watch games in Sunken Diamond].  And, of course, Dr. Tom scheduled [and beat!] Bemidji State... so there's that.
