Sadly true.  Newsom did pretty well early in the pandemic to not become New York.  He was more aggressive closing down with fewer cases and fatalities, and as a consequence California was hit less hard than other states in New York.

Then again, he has responded to pressure to reopen and has been slow to reverse the reopening in response to rising case counts.  As a consequence, unfortunately California, along with Texas and Florida, each recorded new daily record deaths due to COVID-19.

Bloomberg article is great. They should have added the Cuomo de Blasio clash as well. One thing Newsom did NOT mess up on is that he didn't prevent the Counties from being more strict than the State was. It may be that California law is such that he can't do that anyway, but I simply can't imagine why any Governor would do such a thing. Obviously many have. It is just stupid. There is no political downside. If the County health department is willing to take the heat, let them.

Funny, one of my beefs is that County Health Directors rule the roost.  I want to see that change. I believe it should be elected officials setting forth the orders.  They have accountability to their constituents.  Certainly the Bd of Supes for the county should be listening to the county health directors and maybe just rubberstamping what they’re saying. But at least we have the ability to voice our pleasure or displeasure at the ballot box.

BTW- It’s incredibly easy to say these States reopened too early.  But what was the right time.  This appears likely to be with us for quite awhile.  If the lockdowns continued another 6 months, there may not have been much left to reopen to.  Plus it’s not big business that was hurt the most economically.  Nor is it the wealthy.  It’s those living paycheck to paycheck.  Independent contractors in the service industry. Etc. 

Also a question.  Georgia was one of the early states to reopen.  But I don’t believe it has had the big uptick. Am I wrong. If I’m not, are there theories as to why?

DisneyWorld reopened last week even though cases in Florida are setting new national records. Meanwhile, Disneyland was going to open July 17 but has been indefinitely postponed. Shouldn’t local officials, elected or appointed, met some set of minimum national standards? Irresponsible people from around the country are traveling to Florida now and will be fueling more spread when they return to their home states.

Do we want people who are running for re-election at whatever level to be setting health policy? On the national level, we have an example why that should not be the case.
There is a reason why county health directors were given authority to make health decisions.
