well this is an interesting potential twist from the Stanford housing office

we may need to change plans. We expect to reach a decision in mid- to late August. If we do need to cancel the on-site aspects of autumn quarter, we will reconfigure our cohort plan so that frosh, sophomores, and first-year transfers do not have to wait until summer to be on campus.

The campus described would be such an awful experience I am not so sure there is a lot of value to living on campus.   

I saw the comment about "not have to wait until summer to be on campus" and thought... 
Right...
They will have to wait for fall 2021 to be on campus.  :)

The freshman year is a real big part of the Stanford Undergraduate experience and it looks like their on campus experience will not be that great.  It will be unique, so perhaps that will turn into a positive for them over time.
