Because as much as everyone on the outside isn't believing the games will actually be played, and well over half of people polled don't think it should be, it sure doesn't look like anything is stopping P5 conferences from playing games if they get the safety concerns ironed out with the athletes.
The NCAA could make life a bit easier by not only cancelling the upcoming football season but most if not all other fall sports. As far as the $$$ impact on college athletic programs, the NCAA in concert with the NFL, NBA, MLB, Amazon, Musk, Apple, Google and the rest of the tech gang should be able to cobble together some sort of financial support and maybe Wall Street could help just for grins. I would hate to be in the shoes of a university president or an athletic director who would like to see fall sports cancelled, but have not been able to secure the necessary support from the administration/board of trustees.
I have two family members who both recently retired from teaching and doing research at the university level in computer science/GIS/information systems/AI and in bio-medical research (cancer/Aids/Ebola). Both have serious autoimmune conditions and would have taken early retirement had they not retired. Both expressed the concern of the potential for this virus to decimate the scientific and medical communities, especially those groups of individuals who work in the university teaching and research environment. Many of the senior members in these professions have existing medical conditions which when coupled with this virus will most likely kill them.
