That team matched up physically and one of the great defensive plays in Stanford history was a Bo Boxold hit on Charles White on a fourth and one. Boxold was doomed by injuries as was the other ILB named Budinger. Plus Robbie Chapman who looked like a future star at safety flunked out. Plenty of talent to compete with the So Cals in ‘78. And the next year a 21-21 tie ruined their perfect season.
Remember it well. Robbie Chapman was the heralded running back recruit. Not Darrin. Course, luckily for Darrin, Walsh knew talent and was not afraid to let a 160 pound freshman RB with off the charts talent do his thing. He moved Chapman to safety. Best athletes on the field....
Nelson before his track injury was phenomenal. He was great after. But I always thought it cost him a step. 1000 and 50. Three times. No one else had ever done it. Man he was fun to watch.
