I'm thankful for friends, family and people who fully articulate a well-thought-out opposing idea.
And just for grins, I am thankful for Abraham Lincoln. Not for the obvious reasons, but because he was the President who first established Thanksgiving as a national holiday. In 1817, New York was the first state to establish Thanksgiving as a state holiday. Obviously, there were various celebrations prior to that date and in other colonies.
Earlier presidents had made Thanksgiving proclamations of one sort or another, including Washington, Adams and Madison.

President Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a national holiday in the middle of the Civil War, on 10/3/63.
