HURRAH!  So relieved about Williams.

On the other mystery about why UCLA's Aussies can't be here, the restriction applies only to new students and only to students coming to a campus that is entirely online.  Some universities--and I presume Stanford among them--have kept a minuscule number of  in-person classes they can send their foreign students to (they only need one in each student's schedule) so as to evade the restriction. 

Apparently UCLA would not play the evasion game and its frosh from out of country are stuck at home. 

The new policy reasons is predicated on the assumption that there is no need for a foreign student to journey to the US to attend college if everything is online.  (And I have had some foreign students in my classes--the one from Japan had to stay up to 1am every day to be in my synchronous course.)

Now, if you want to know the reason for this terrible policy, I would have to get into politics, which is not appropriate for this board.  I think the policy is terrible, and the more you know about it the worse it seems.

There is a long paywalled piece in The Athletic by Chantel Jennings dated Dec 22 that goes into this in great detail. A total nightmare for the students. I do feel very sorry for them.
