Heard Brent Jones on KNBR the other day. I like Jones because he's very candid. He questioned whether Harbaugh had what it took at a professional level on the 49ers flagship station while Harbaugh was in his second year there.
The topic was the 49er QB position, whether 49ers should keep Garoppolo or whether they should go after Watson, Stafford or Rodgers. Brent's comments, in no particular order:
1) JG pre-ACL tear was an excellent quarterback, with a superb w/l record. Post ACL tear, JG is mediocre. Unlikely to improve.
2) QBs aside, a healthy 49er team is a proven Super Bowl team.
3) Jones' QB's in order of preference, as he stated it: 1) Stafford, 1a), Rodgers, 3) Watson.
4) Thinks Watson is a terrific quarterback, but the Texans will demand -- and receive -- a ridiculous amount of draft picks, along the lines of the Ricky Williams trade from a few years ago. Watson is, after all, 25 and has been All Pro three times in four years.
5) Thinks Stafford is a superb quarterback, quoted Steve Young as saying Stafford would be one of the best QBs in the league if he wasn't laboring under bad coaching, bad ownership, bad GMs and bad players (outside of Calvin Johnson). Said that Stafford on the 49ers would be reborn. Also said Stafford has the perfect blend of time left (he's only 32) and experience (he's been in the league 12 years). He's highly, highly durable.
6) Jones said that the Niners have the best WR/TE mix of all NFL teams in Aiyuk, Samuel and Kittle and it isn't close.
7) Said Rodgers would be a superb addition, but that Rodgers might feel oddly about going to the 49ers since he's publicly lambasted them over the years for not making him the #1 overall NFL selection.
