I recall commentary 10 to 20 years ago regarding the lack of use of the hook shot in the NBA resulting from a perception among players that it wasn't, for lack of a better word, "manly". The theory was that tall players could be much more dominant than they are but are afraid of being ridiculed by the rest of basketball culture for employing a "weak" offensive move, so they don't develop the skill set that would ultimately make them a brobdingnagian asset in the NBA. It's hard to believe being bullied is enough to make a player not willing to try to develop a shot that could really extend their careers. I wonder how much truth there is to this theory.
