Teams are looking for a winning formula that they can apply using "average" players. Most of the players don't have the skill set to enable situational hitting. They have been trained to do one thing, and that is it. Large organizations seem to prefer predictability over ability. Everybody becomes interchangeable. That way, identifying prospects and making player selections is much easier. The up side is limited, but so is the down side. Baseball has become totally corporate.
The problem with this model is that eventually it turns off the fans base. Baseball becomes "boring" and nobody watches it on TV, let alone going to the park. Right now, the leagues are trying to create some "star power", but it isn't going so well. It is hard to sell a bland product as entertainment. Hopefully this will eventually lead to some team having success by actually having good players who can hit both for power and average, and a manager who will hit and run. Not going to happen soon I'm afraid.
