If anything, I think West starting this first game means that he won't finish the season as starter. Shaw has never had a QB competition where the winner of the competition aka game 1 starter ended up finishing the year as the starter. 

I also think Keller's knee injury in the Sun Bowl affected him both mentally and physically more than we know. He was 6-0 as a starter and used his athleticism surprisingly well. I remember him being the lead (and very effective) blocker for Christian on a number of reverse plays. That was gone the following year and hurt his game. Probably made him think too much.
