When you've lost Bill Plaschke, well, he'll probably be back on the Helton bandwagon if USC recovers from their Stanford shellacking. His positions bend with whichever way the wind is blowing. I subscribe to the LA Times, but rarely read his column.
A more astute writer might have observed how USC coaches, with the exception of Pete Carroll, have failed to live up to the outsized expectations of the fans and alumni for the last 40 years. Ted Tollner, Larry Smith, John Robinson Part 2, Paul Hackett, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Clay Helton. None of them has left a lasting mark of success. Maybe there is something wrong with the institution, rather than the coaches themselves.
