You gotta think that throughout spring ball and fall camp, all that work, all those hours...surely McKee would have stood out to the trained eyes of our coaching staff.

In the press conference Shaw basically said he didn't show that. He didn't "win" the job in the spring and he didn't "win" the job in summer practice. One could still say that he really did and that Shaw et al were biased against that outcome, but I doubt that is the case. If anything, one would think they actively wanted McKee to be the "next big thing" and declared him the starter early on. Since I wasn't there I have no basis to say one way or the other, but I can't imagine Shaw would have been reluctant to declare the obvious in this case if indeed it was obvious.
