I know. My point is we didn't have a real hope that year either....
I think our most legitimate shot at a national title was in 2015. The season-opening loss to Northwestern gave us zero margin for error; and the Ducks put the nail in our coffin when we got our second loss. In the end, we landed at 6th in the CFP rankings, just behind Iowa, who we then demolished in the Rose Bowl. That team, which was peaking toward the end of the season (apart from the loss to the Ducks at home), might have made some waves in the CFP. And the way McCaffrey, Hogan and Co. dismantled Iowa, they should arguably have been in the CFP ahead of Michigan State, which got blown out by Alabama in the first game. So the Ducks killed our hopes that year.
