If Bailey were to come to Stanford and put one of the OLB spots on lockdown for a few years, I wonder whether we’d see someone recruited as a edge defender bulk up to play DE. Maybe Aybar or Cooper.
I am on board with Phogge’s point that football is a business. I’m not sure I agree that so much is resting on the ‘22 season, but if the goal is to maximize near term results on the field, that militates in favor of keeping some fifth/sixth year players around. Even guys who’ve slowed in developing are still valuable in their latter years of eligibility as they’ve already hit grown man status. If you get lucky and unexpectedly land a star recruit, that’s one thing, but the 23rd recruit in this class is not likely to provide more as a true freshman than say Miezan or Williamson would as a fifth year senior.
