Buster was a terrific catcher, best all-time for the Giants and the SF Bay Area. Better JAWS rating (7-year peak career WAR average) than Bresnahan or Ewing, Campanella or Elston Howard, Bailey or Haller. He's #14 on the career list for full time catchers, and only Thurman Munson isn't in the Hall of Fame (Joe Mauer is still active).
I doubt he'll manage. I think he wants to walk away. He strikes me as a lot of my co-workers -- the last 1 1/2 years sequestered because of COVID has changed him. He did well this year, but I think he wants family time. Maybe he wants out of California, who knows?
This hurts. I don't think either Bart or Bailey (yet) are the solution. I think we're heading for a free agent, especially after the salary that's been freed up, but this is a weak market. Yan Gomes, who's average, then a big dropoff to a bunch of .200 +/- hitters.
Ten months ago, Joey Bart was considered to be the 2nd best catching prospect in all of the minor leagues. He hit .294, OBP of .358, OPS of .831, 10 HRs and 46 RBIs in 252 ABs. Maybe he's the answer.
