Great post. One correction: Stanford gave up 17 points to Wisconsin in the 2000 Rose Bowl (not 42.) Ron Dayne did run wild though that wasn't Stanford's main problem that day. The bigger issue was only scoring 9 points, though much of that had to do with Troy Walters having a broken hand and our all-conference center playing very gimpy that day.

Sorry I wasn't clearer. I remember that Rose Bowl well. Who wouldn't? We spent the night before in a bowling alley somewhere in San Fernando Valley and left at 2 in the morning to spend the rest of the early morning sleeping in a minivan at the parade route just to avoid the gunfire.  The Marine was all of five at the time. I meant that a bad defense would have given up 42 points to the Dayne machine, but Stanford didn't. Defense kept them in the game. If you told me Stanford would hold Wisconsin to 17, I would have predicted a blowout in Stanford's favor. It really was a good Big 10 type of game. Wasn't Stanford missing their starting center?  Troy Walters played when he wasn't supposed to play, and that was cool. I recall the offense wasn't at full strength. Those Dana Bible teams were known for their offense, but the Kent Baer defense was decently stout. Maybe not Fangio stout, but stout enough for entertaining football.
