I remember seeing some documentary years ago of a frame-by-frame analysis of the play that unequivocally showed forward laterals, but not for the reason I expected.  When two players side by side are running forward and one laterals to the other, the ball looks like it is moving perpendicularly to the sideline but in fact it is traveling forward.  It isn't even a close call once you know how to watch for it.  That is what instant replay would have easily spotted, even if "his knee was down" turned out to be a close call.

And yes, I do turn it off now when it comes on.  Decades of time have not healed that wound.

I do think the fake Daily Cal is one of the best hoaxes off all time, as I have posted here before several times.  Masterfully done.

I recently did a show with Kevin [Eli's Places on ESPN+, which was fun and irreverent], and, among the outtakes, I mentioned the 5th "lateral" being forward, and my remarks were received like a fart in church.

Which is still better-received than would be any mention of one of Cal's key participants in the travesty that was The Play.  
But we civilized folks don't do that because . . . well, we "get" that some things make a football game - even one ending with The Play - look so unimportant in the grand scheme of life.
