Matz would have been a nice pickup. I thought Giants were”close” to the Alex’s - Wood and Cobb. I have a concern about Giants losing out on players because they won’t pay top dollar within the particular range. I don’t know how “real” the Calif tax premium is. But if that’s reality, deal with it.
This off season is the most important in years. 107 win team in a big market with a ton of money available to them. The reputation of excellent coaching. They darn well better come up big this off season.
That doesn’t necessarily mean signing a whale. Although they should. It does mean signing about 4 more mid level starting pitchers (or obtaining through a trade) an everyday outfielder as I think Yaz will be platooned (they don’t have any) preferably that can play Center and a top end multi position (they aren’t utility players anymore) player.
The Giants have enormous turnover. Posey has retired. Unless they score big this off season they easily can backslide to a. .500 or below team
What they did in ‘21 was remarkable. But not sustainable. They need some stability in the staff and a couple key position pickups. Think 3 year deals.
Their minor league system is strong now. But prospects are just that. And their top ones are a couple years away. Zaidi and Co can determine who is quasi untouchable. Any others may be trade chips for the right deal. It’s essentially what the Dodgers did. Along with finding the diamonds in the rough and signing the occasional whale.
Watch what Dodgers do this off season. Seager is probably going to be a 6 to 7 $ 180 to 200 million guy. Giants won’t even consider, I suspect. Dodgers look to be ready to resign. If they also add Scherzer at around $30 to $35 for a year or two and sign Taylor, you have your answer. The organizations will be dealing at completely different levels. Giants cannot consistently compete if that is the case.
As for SD - Melvin is already a key signing. Bring some stability to a team with talent. They may be in ‘22 what they were expected to be in ‘21.
78-84 would take a lot from what was achieved this year.
