When Texas is paying athletes 100k per year, including for WVB, what is Stanford gonna do?
This is the mess the NCAA has created by not making athletes employees and capping compensation. It's now the WILD Wild West, with no regulations, and a total free for all. It's like the Lord of the Flies now.
I'm getting more turned off college sports every day and my passion for it is almost gone.
Not feasible to make athletes employees. And I don’t think a “cap” for compensation would be legal. And how would you set wages? If it’s hourly, what rate. You think NCAA could fix the price? Highly doubt that. And does the football star get paid the same as a (pick your non-revenue sport). The problems associated with athletes as employees is overwhelming.
Watch the HBO doc on college athlete labor exploitation. It's all about classification, and the NLRB has now ruled it will classify college athletes as employees. The issue then becomes one of athletes unionizing and collectively bargaining. I understand the mechanics of organizing 17 and 18 year olds is problematic on many fronts, namely how little they know about how the world works being so young.
What needs to happen is the adults have to make decisions that take care of the young people, but when the hell has that ever happened in this world?
