And sure, almost any hire - certainly the ones Stanford would consider at its salary point - will be a roll of the dice; but when you're desperate to bring hope back to the program, you should be more willing to roll 'em.

I don't disagree that when you are desperate you do desperate things. That usually doesn't work out well, because your judgement is clouded by emotions, mostly fear. IMHO you have to find somebody that you can say "Yeah, this has a good chance of working". Even that often doesn't work. If you can't even meet that low bar, that doesn't give me any hope, and I am sure it won't give the athletes any hope either. On that we may just disagree.
