Better an unknown than a name brand like Meyer or a rising star like the Cincy coach.
I wonder what USB fans think of the hire.
This demonstrates how little you know about the inner workings of ND football. Not that you should know, but the fan base is ECSTATIC about making Freeman the HC. It's kind of analogous to when Harbaugh left. Stanford fans were really happy David Shaw was elevated to HC from being a coordinator on the staff.
Like Shaw, Freeman oversaw an impressive unit and does well on camera. Freeman, perhaps unlike Shaw, is also known as a fantastic recruiter, though I think in Shaw's case that box was checked by the "who better than a guy who played at Stanford" to sell it. So a lot of similarities between Freeman and Shaw. Plus, they are both Black men if that is materially relevant.
My only perspective is from the POV of a Stanford fanatic, not the inner gizzards of USB football. I consider myself an above-average follower of college football in general, obviously, not as much as you follow it.
Freeman could be in a lineup with George Clooney, Shaq, Antonio Banderas, and Jackie Chan and I might still have trouble identifying him. He's an unknown to me, and I suspect, to many others with my similar dedication to following college football.
I don't consider it a splash hire for them and am happy about it as a Stanford fan.
The first time I heard of Freeman was watching a little of the game this past weekend when the broadcasters talked about him. Then, when Kelly departed, I went to Twitter and it became obvious there was an enthusiastic consensus that Freeman was the ideal Kelly replacement. IOW, I too couldn't have identified him at this time last week. It was just overwhelming to me to see how much support there was for elevating Freeman to HC.
It may not be a splash hire in terms of the casual observer, but for those who follow ND and the greater college football world closely, it certainly seems to be going over very well. The fact Freeman has assistants staying with him and not following Kelly says a lot too.
