It's easy to say in hindsight after an injury that starters should be pulled in a blowout to avoid injury, but really, anyone (starter or backup) can be injured any time they are playing. The end of a blowout isn't a much more likely time to get injured than any other time. Maybe a bit more if it's getting chippy or fatigue is a factor.
You certainly can question Geno playing his starters so much even in blowouts. The main arguments I see are that he should give his bench some experience, should not overwork his starters, and (maybe) shouldn't run up the score. This injury isn't really what proves he should play the bench more.
