This reflexive, ritualistic "most importantly, we BEAT CAL!!!!!" stuff is boring at this juncture in human evolution. Who gives a damn if we beat a team considerably more mediocre than ours? 

I sure as hell do. Must be the Denisova hominins in me.

As the Church Lady said to Shirley McLaine, "Well isn't that special." Of course I'm pleased that Stanford "won" rather than "lost," but I see nothing praiseworthy in the fact that we beat Cal in a snoozer any more than I see it as praiseworthy that we beat any of the marshmallows that we continue to schedule and usually shellac each pre-conference season.
