It's a safety issue that's been tested in the minor leagues; reduces runners sliding directly into fielders, or running into the first baseman. Also makes it easier for runners to pop up instead of sliding through the bag as is common now.
One thing I wish they would do is not call runners out on replay who involuntarily pop off the bag by a couple inches.
Supposedly the bigger bases help with that a lot, they have more give.

It's effectively 20 pitchers with guys like Jackson, Brebbia, Long and Doval et al repeatedly shuttling back and forth between SF and Sacramento. With modern roster manipulation an entire additional bullpen stays within the new 5-option limit and thereby expands the pitching staff substantially.
