The Stanford men, of course, do not need any reminders of this.
It was UNC, making things worse.

The similarity in these years was striking: a massively underseeded UNC team. The team that beat Stanford made it to the Final Four. Will this one? Very possible. We'll see. BTW, I was at that game in Birmingham. The things that chapped the most: (i) Monty playing Casey (2-12) too much over Mendez (4-4), and (ii) the refs letting UNC's stud two-way athlete, Julius Peppers, play football on the hardwood without any whistles. There was a particularly brutal knock down/bowl over of a Stanford player, no whistle, leading to turnover favoring UNC and a bucket after that, iirc. And that game was tighter than final score.
But real bottom line is that UNC should not have been on 8/9 line, if they had stayed healthy and played anywhere near their potential during the regular season. As soon as the draw came out that year, the coaches knew Stanford was in for a tough R2 game.
