The thing is that whether Esquer turns out to be a great hire or middling one (or even if he descends into disaster), there is already more than enough cause to fire Muir.

I think there is a mistaken tendency that once a conclusion has been reached on a person, everything is viewed through that lens. In truth life is never that neat, and great people can sometimes screw up while incompetent people sometimes make good decisions.  With regards to Muir, I think the totality of the evidence, even allowing for some good hiring decisions, does not change that assessment. Esquer could turn things around and win the CWS this year and I would still believe Muir’s other bad decisions outweigh a potentially great coaching hire.

As for Esquer, I wouldn’t let a bad start to a season outweigh his generally positive accomplishments to date. Again, I think he has exceeded expectations based on the totality of evidence so far, notwithstanding *gestures wildly* this.
